Poiesis, the music and art collaboration, was conceived in AY 2010-2011 by Prof. Jocelyn Timbol-Guadalupe and myself as a venue for educational exchange and cultural experience between students of the College of Fine Arts and the College of Music by providing them with an opportunity to interact and express their ideas as well as enhance their knowledge and artistic talents within their disciplines. This endeavor allows them to discover how the curricular offerings complement each other.

Poiesis in its pure form is creation whether verbal, musical or visual. In music, creation can be manifested through composition and improvisation.
The rationale of improvisation can be based on the musician’s sensitivity to the interpretation of reality and expressing these through sounds and movements by combining the musical elements of times, tone, intensity, form and space; while musical elements provide the ingredients for sound and movement improvisation. The themes common to the arts provide the impetus uniting both the visual and musical arts.
Music educator-researcher Patricia Campbell enumerates such themes like repetition and contrast, tension and release, density, patterns-motive-theme and variation, balance and symmetry, as well as foreground and background.
